Report by Sarah Jenkinson

Garstang returned to 2nd in the table at home to a young Formby side.

Good pressure at the start of the game almost resulted in the Reds taking an early lead on 7 minutes. Rebecca Worthington on the right getting down towards the bi-line and putting in a cross and although there where two players running in on goal, neither could connect.

Patience and good play paid off in the 19th minute with Jude Chapman playing a great forward ball from midfield. Kiery Horne picked the pass up an played an almost identical cross as Worthington's earlier attempt and this time, forward Fran Summers on the end of it with a first time hit in front of goal. Two minutes later, Summers scored again, another similar goal with Di Roe being the provider this time but for a more central position.

Garstang almost made it three goals in six minutes when Alice Marsden smashed the ball in from the left wing and Kiery Horne on the right hand post forced a superb paddle save from the Formby keepers left hand. Moments later, Fran Summers reverse hooked a high ball in to the goal which would have gone in had the in form keeper not tipped it over. A fantastic ten minute spell for the home side.

Gemma Trickett almost got in on the act just before half time with a low shot to the keepers right but she got down to the ground quick and made a great save with her stick.

Garstang didn't want half time to come. A buoyed Formby started well but conceded a penalty flick only 3 minutes later when a defender ran in to another on target Worthington effort. Worthington calmly converted the flick to the left high in to the roof of the net giving the flailing keeper no chance. Three nil up the Reds were coasting. It took another 15 minutes for the game's first penalty corner. A slip to Alice Marsden and a great strike but it was just off target. The game then became a dogged affair, lots of midfield tussles with Jen Moss battling away and Jude Chapman, Lyndsey Hayes and Lily Helme sticking tight to their players and not giving Formby much chance to put anything together. Defenders Linsday Thornhill, captain Donna Richardson and Georgie Brumwell had a relatively quiet day, protecting keeper Alanis Parkinson and neatly clearing up any sign of a Formby attack. They did concede two penalty short corners but neither came to anything.

The Reds were not done yet though, Reb Worthington on the right crossing some great balls in. Trickett got on the end only for her strike to hit the keepers helmet and minutes later the same again but the keeper made a diving stick save. Trickett made it third time lucky not long later with another cross from Worthington. Trickett made it 4-0 and got her third of the season when she ran towards it and with a first time hit the ball flew past the stranded keeper.

Garstang played some really good hockey at times and created lots of chances. Had it not been for the heroics of the Formby keeper the scoreline could easily have been double. The only slight on the afternoon was an injury to Jen Moss who fell awkwardly twisting her knee and had to leave the field.

That's six wins out of eight now with next weeks game against local rivals, mid table Longridge.
